On creating the style of set for Tea with Jules: I wanted a backdrop that wasn’t going to be too attention-grabbing, the focus needs to be on the person I’m interviewing rather than a huge statement piece of art that distracts from the interview. Together with Emma Blomfield from TheHome.com.au we selected a calming colour palette with a layered effect. There were lots of grey tones from light grey on the sofa through to the charcoal armchair whilst incorporating this into the cushions and the artwork. There wasn’t too much colour on the set except for touches of navy blue in the ginger jars and the cushions as well as the beautiful seascape artwork on the wall. The ginko tree in the corner was a nice touch of nature which every room needs.

On the best ways to get a modern luxe look in the home: Stick to a neutral colour palette, maybe only choose one colour that stands out but keep the rest light greys, beige tones or taupe tones. That way you have the flexibility to layer colour and texture on top of this. Also think about using the right sized furniture pieces. Often you don’t need a lot of furniture to create the right look, you just need to buy furniture that is the perfect size for the room.

On making small changes to get this look if you have a tight budget: Bring greenery indoors. You might even have some plants in the garden you could put into a pot and display in your living room. Light candles for nice ambient light as well as a beautiful scent. Fill your cushions on your sofa with feather inserts instead of synthetic materials, they’ll look really plush and are much nicer to sit on too. Purchase new lamp shades for a lamp you still like but needs a refresh.

On investment prices to nail this look: Your sofa is something that you shouldn’t be scrimping on, it’s the most used piece in a living room so investing in it will pay off in the long run. Also think about investing in a beautiful piece of art that takes up a lot of wall space, it’ll be eye catching and attention grabbing which means it will set the look for the rest of the room too.
